PRLog - Oct. 3, 2012 - SCADA or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition is referring to the unified systems that performs the monitoring as well as control of the entire complex or sites of systems which are scattered over wide area. An example of this is a golf course which requires a centralized system in order to monitor the huge area it covers.

Majority of the controls are mechanically performed by Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) or Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) while the host controls are mostly restricted to certain functions like supervisory level involvement or simple overriding.

For instance, the movement of cooling liquid can be controlled by the PLC from a portion of the process; however, the system of SCADA could allow the operators to alter the set points intended for the movement then enable the conditions of alarm like high temperature and loss of flow, to be logged and displayed.
Feedback from the control loop will pass through the PLC or RTU while the monitoring or the loop’s overall performance is being monitored by the SCADA system.

SCADA Plan Overview

The acquisition of the data begins at the level of PLC or RTU which includes the status report of the equipment as well as the meter readings which are feed into the SCADA when needed.

The data will be compiled then configured in a manner in which control room operator using HMI could come up with a supervisory decision on adjustments or overriding the normal RTU controls.

The data can also be fed into the Historian which is usually on the Database Management System of commodity to enable the trending along with other diagnostic auditing.

What are the primary benefits of SCADA?

SCADA system is completely independent, visible and has a transparent operation. The users will be able to indicate the things they need to see, record, control and report.

Its remote and easy access only requires the web browser and no complicated software is needed.

It has an independent grid, turbine and remote interface for meteorological station that provides maximum integrity of data entry.

The system can be customized easily to meet certain standards of the turbine manufacturers, wind farm operators, developers and financiers and golf course owners and operators.

The system has a typical graphical interface that allows the user a common front end display for a specific application

Its common reporting enables the user to come up with a report having the same format for the entire golf course

The SCADA Architecture

During the early generation, computing is performed by means of mainframe computers alone.  When SCADA was first developed, there was no network existed making it an independent system that had no connection to other systems. RTU vendors later designed the Wide Area Network or WAN so it can communicate with the RTU. During that time, the communication protocols used were usually propriety.
The processing was then distributed to various multiple stations connected by means of LAN when information was shared in real time. Every station had a specific task, allowing the cost and size of each station lesser compared to system utilized during the first generation.

Because of standard protocol usage and due to the fact that a lot of SCADA networked system can already be accessed through the internet, it has become prone to remote system attack. However, the use of standard protocol along with the security techniques indicates an improvement in the security which can be applied to the SCADA systems, in case scheduled updates and maintenance are received.
One big advantage of the SCADA system is that the operators will be able to extract more data from the programmable system controllers. The older method where the operators needed to make individual reading from every flow meter by going around the turf is already a thing of the past.

At present the flows in the golf course will be totaled by the PLC wherein the data can be easily received by the operator even when just seated at his desk comfortably. The PLC can also calculate the running time of the motors so that the operators can be provided with information when changing the units is already needed.

Although SCADA systems can be expensive because of the software, equipment and operation, the savings you can make in the operation can justify the expenses.
