Oct. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- SAN MATEO, CA— C.W. Driver’s Northern California office announced today it has been named Construction Manager at Risk for the $53.3 million Student Recreation and Wellness Center at San Francisco State University. The Center will be constructed on the northwest side of the campus at the current site of Sutro Library. The architect for the project is WRNS Studio.

The 112,270 square feet facility is designed as an indoor activity space for students and the campus community. Other elements of the project will include a safe and accessible pedestrian connection to the main campus, the development of a softball field, hammer throw area, landscaping with connecting pathways and other site improvements. Its construction will vastly expand the opportunities on campus for students to workout, swim, take a fitness class, play sports or relax.

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center includes gymnasiums, multipurpose studios, an elevated jogging track, indoor leisure pool with lap lanes, racquetball courts, rock climbing wall, a state-of-the-art weight and fitness area, multipurpose studios, top-of-the-line equipment, wellness program space, classrooms and administrative offices. Student programs and services such as fitness classes, conferences, concerts and events will be integrated into the design providing an enriching environment focused on campus life and a place for connection.

C.W. Driver was selected for the project because of its proven track record with higher educational facilities, including student recreation centers. The company has completed several other CSU-oriented student recreation centers, including those at California State University, Northridge; California State University, Long Beach and California State University, Fullerton. The student recreation center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, currently is in pre-construction.

Mike Castillo, Senior Vice President of the Northern California Region, said the project would benefit from C.W. Driver’s expertise within the recreation center arena. “We are honored to be selected to work with San Francisco State University on this project,” said Castillo. “Our previous experiences in building student recreation centers will add value to the project and can be leveraged to take this facility to the next level.”
