Washington, D.C. - TEDx Mid-Atlantic Conference has announced the addition of Washington, D.C. hip-hop artist Sage Salvo to the speaker lineup alongside notable guests such as Former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Sage Salvo will become the first American hip-hop artist on a TEDx stage to elevate the genius in hip-hop lyrics through a literary analysis which pairs historical poetry with the poetry of hip-hop by means of their respective use of literary devices. He is also the first to reconcile hundreds of years of poetry with regard to hip-hop which he explores in his forthcoming book, Words Liive: Hip-Hop as a Forty Year Neo-Romantic Literary Period.
In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At TEDx Mid-Atlantic, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The event takes place on October 26-27 and the 2012 theme is “Be Fearless.”
“Music is a vehicle that allows you to travel into the deepest human sentiments in completely foreign contexts but still find yourself there. For this reason, we have to set aside our fears and discomforts to really deal with the literary genius in hip-hop. This is what Words Liive is all about!” said Sage Salvo. “I’m confident the TEDx platform will be great for the continued spread of Words Liive.”
Salvo is the creator of Words Liive: The Poetry of Hip-Hop Lecture Series, a literary arts fusion program in D.C. that has featured Grammy-nominated artists such as Maimouna Youssef and Carolyn Malachi. Commencing this year, Words Liive has been adopted by a select number of Washington D.C. area high schools as an ancillary creative writing program. As a Ph.D. Economics candidate, Gil Perkins (Sage Salvo) is a Professor at Howard University.
