Data Physics Matrix Vibration Controller Runs Seismic Tests at Morgan State University

Data Physics SignalStar Matrix Vibration Controller Runs Seismic Tests for New Multi Axis Earthquake Test Facility at Morgan State University

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct. 2, 2012 - San Jose, CA – October 2, 2012 – Morgan State University is determined to invest in research and development. This is evidenced by the completion of the 125,000 square foot, $67-million Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies (CBEIS). The grand opening for this facility was on September 20, 2012.

CBEIS is unique in serving as a technology center for projects from multiple disciplines from Architecture to Engineering. A key portion of the center’s Civil Engineering research is the ability to conduct multi-axis earthquake testing. Multi-axis earthquake testing simultaneously excites either two or three axes of vibration to simulate earthquake events. Many different types of equipment are tested to these vibrations for survivability. This testing includes research and qualification of hospital equipment according to the International Code Council Evaluation Services Acceptance Criteria 156 (ICC-ES AC156).

The Data Physics SignalStar Matrix Vibration Controller is used to control the 3 meter by 3 meter biaxial shaker table installed by Shore Western. The vibration controller measures the motion of the table and continuously makes adjustments to output signals to the table such that the desired motion level and frequency is matched.  The Matrix controller is configured with 16 input channels and 2 drive (output) channels. It includes Matrix software capable of controlling two shakers with sine, random, classical shock, transient, SRS synthesis and control, time waveform replication, and mixed mode. This full featured controller is typical of those used for dual shaker testing.

The vibration test system is capable of testing all three of the primary established specifications for seismic qualification:

•   NEBS GR-63-CORE: Network Equipment-Building System Requirements for the Telecommunications Industry (also referred to as “Bellcore”)
•   IEEE 344-2004: Recommended Practice for Seismic Qualification of Class 1E Equipment for Nuclear Power Generating Stations
•   ICC-ES AC156: Certification of critical equipment for hospitals, schools, government, emergency shelters, and public places

The SignalStar Matrix Vibration Controller is the industry leading controller for multishaker control. This controller features advanced algorithms for control and incorporates years of customer feedback into the features and capabilities.
