Heartland International, a 23-year-old, Chicago-based not-for-profit promoting more citizen participation in emerging democracies around the world, will announce it’s name change to Citizen Bridges International (CBI) effective October 1, 2012.

The announcement of the new name will be made on October 1 at a reception at the Buckingham Athletic Club in Chicago's Loop.  Dozens of the group’s staff and board members, partners and other supporters will gather for the occasion.

“Citizen Bridges International will continue Heartland’s proud tradition of bringing groups of professionals from nations around the world together to engage with their peers and to learn best practices and models in their fields while in the United States,” said Citizen Bridges President Julie Stagliano. “We think our new name better reflects who we are and what we do, stressing our commitment to helping young leaders from emerging nations establish collaborative relationships and support the evolution of their societies and governments.”
Since its founding in 1989, Citizen Bridges has brought nearly 2,000 professionals – ranging from doctors and judges to journalists, teachers and NGO leaders – to Chicago for three to four week programs.  They represent more than 30 countries on five continents including Russia, Ukraine, Belize, Morocco, Belarus, Kenya, Indonesia, Tanzania, Egypt and Turkey. Some more recent Fellowship programs are designed for a reciprocal format, enabling Chicago business and organization counterparts to visit the participants' countries to share technical expertise, participate in forums and gain a fuller understanding of other cultures and their political and social structure.

While in Chicago, program participants spend equal measures of their time learning in seminars, job shadowing with peers in their fields, meeting with other leaders in their professions and taking in the cultural highlights of the city of Chicago.  All participants are accommodated in private homes of volunteer hosts, further enriching their cultural experience.

“The work of Citizen Bridges has touched the lives of thousands of participants from overseas; but just as importantly it has had a tremendous impact on thousands of Chicagoans and others who have volunteered in our programs over the years,” said Phyllis Handelman, chair of the board of directors of CBI. “These citizen exchanges are critical to international understanding and peace.”
