Oct. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Stamford, CT -- Landfall, the nation’s leading marine safety outfitter and The Dinghy Locker, the source for all dinghy racers and sailors are partnering with twelve year old Justin Smith of Oyster Bay, NY as he ambitiously plans to perform a charity sail across the Long Island Sound, solo in his 8’ Optimist pram sailboat from Stamford, CT to Oyster Bay, NY on Saturday October 20, 2012.

Smith will be raising funds for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, in an effort to fund a “Bioextraction Project” which uses seaweed and ribbed mussels to naturally filter pollution from the water resulting in improved water clarity.  As Smith recently said “I’m dedicated to this project because I sail and swim In The Sound and I want it to stay clean.  I think it’s important to protect The Sound so a wide variety of fish and other marine wildlife can continue to safely live there.”

Justin’s parents, rightly so, are extremely proud of their son for taking his passion and using it for the greater good.  According to Justin’s father and mother “He has taken his love of sailing and being on the water and created a wonderful project to help clean and protect an entire aquatic environment.  We are sincerely grateful for the support that Landfall and others have shown for Justin’s upcoming sail and cause.  Landfall’s support continues to be particularly instrumental in getting the word out about Justin’s charitable project in ways well beyond what he could have done on his own.”

For his sojourn, Landfall has provided multiple nautical charts of the sailing area so that Justin can chart his course across The Sound.  As well as other safety and comfort gear, such as a sailing whistle that Justin can clip to his life-vest.  A hat and lip balm for sun protection and a re-useable and recyclable water bottle to help Justin reduce his overall carbon footprint.

Fundraising for Justin’s endeavor has been supported along multiple grass-roots efforts.  Justin has canvassed local businesses for support of his cause as well as harnessed the ability of social media to spread the word. By creating the Facebook page, Justin Protects the LI Sound, Justin has been able to reach a nearly unlimited audience.  “Helping out the cause can be as easy as ’liking’ my Facebook page, as it helps grow the community and awareness among the general public.” added Justin.

Potential sponsors are encouraged to contact his father, Brian Smith, by telephone at 516-650-0838 or by sending donations directly to Justin Smith, PO Box 176 Locust Valley, NY 11560
