Indian Railways levies Service Tax on commuter fares with actual effect

Oct. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- In acquiescence with the accoutrement in Finance Bill 2012, and consecutive notifications issued by the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Government of India, the Ministry of Railways, Government of India has levied, with absolute effect, Account Tax on the fares of commuter casework in AC First Class, Executive Class, AC-2 bank Class, AC-3 bank class, AC Chair Car class, AC Economy Chic and First Class. The Account Tax applies to tickets issued/booked on or afterwards October 1, 2012, according to a PIB report. For tickets issued above-mentioned to the said date, no Account Tax will be calm on lath the trains. In case of abandoning of tickets appointed by the cartage on or afterwards October 1 this year, the applicative amount, including refundable Account Tax amount, will be refunded by the railways, as per the Railway Refund Rules and guidelines of MoF.

Education Cess of two per cent on Account Tax has been added, amounting to 0.072 per cent on the absolute fare, and Higher Education Cess of one per cent on Account Tax has been added, which calculates to 0.036 per cent on the absolute fare. Thus, the absolute Account Tax association is 3.708 per cent on the absolute fare. On concessional bulk tickets, account allegation is levied at 3.708 per cent of the absolute absolute book paid by passengers.
