By: Mira Telecom There is a strong need to develop and modify existing techniques for the analysis of cultural heritage with requirement of high accuracy, micro or non- destructive procedures as well as to develop new diagnostic tools. The experience gained by MIRA TELECOM in several EC, national and especially in the EUREKA project has allowed the company to propose new tools such as a new measurement system for the automatic detection of collagen shrinkage activity and software for the analysis and diagnosis of collagen - based materials. MIRA TELECOM is main partner with leader role and co-financer within the project “Eureka 5837 ADAS (Automatic Damage Assessment System)”, which targets the design of an automated damage assessment system for cultural heritage leather and parchments. The collagen structure of parchments or leathers is degraded under the influence of environmental factors: temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pollutants, light, storage conditions. European museums, religious places of worship and State Archives preserve a large number of documents, books and objects partially made by leather and parchment dated from the 4th to the 20th century. The “Micro Hot Table” (MHT) method consists of taking collagen fiber samples from the analyzed object, placing the hydrate collagen fibers in a closed slide and heating the fibers with and increasing temperature of 2 C degrees per minute in the microscope. The specialist watches the movement of the fibers during the heating process. The MHT method employed is a micro- destructive technique which provides qualitative information on the hydrothermal stability of the analyzed material. The novelty of the shrinkage measurement system lies in its automation by using image processing techniques. The automation of the shrinkage intervals determination provides two main advantages: minimizes the human error and saves the observation time.
