The contest was co-organized by the Fountain Magazine and the Peace Islands Institute (PII) of New York.
Hakan Yeşilova, the editor-in-chief of Fountain told that the aim of the photo contest was to promote a conference, titled “Peace building through Education” and support this academic work with an artistic one. “We would like to emphasize peace through education by using the power of photographs,”
The conference, which was held at Times Center in NY, began with a message from Fethullah Gülen, the honorary chairman of the PII, and a diverse group of international speakers and panels discussed topics including peace building through education, mobilizing civil society for peace building, principles and methodologies in peace education and peace as a shared ideal.
Both professional and amateur photographers of many nationalities and countries above the age of 10 took part in the contest. Best photographs along with winners' were displayed during the conference.
The winner of the competition received $2,000, the runner-up was given $1,000, while the third place finisher was awarded a prize of $500. The five honorable mentions each received $200.
