Sept. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Metanoia, Inc. recently convened a well-received on-line, international, panel on performance management & monitoring, under the aegis of its industry initiative on “Provider Network Health Assessment,” which was an all-around success.

Dr. Vishal Sharma, Principal at Metanoia, Inc. said from his Silicon Valley office “Our initiative focuses on technology and business strategy issues of contemporary importance for service providers globally.”

Dr. Sharma added “The panel is special in being a co-operative industry initiative, whose purpose is to facilitate dialog and interaction between operators (wireless, wired, MSO, data center, and over-the-top players) and eco-system players (hardware & system vendors, software providers, testing vendors, OSS/BSS vendors) to gather the eco-system’s thinking on key issues in performance management.  Contributing experts from major organizations (including observers) have given their time, energy, and expertise to discuss this subject, to collectively advance the industry's understanding, and share best-practices and techniques.” This unique undertaking involved a dozen plus players from the operator ecosystem, from TELUS, Tata, and Twitter to Cisco, InfoVista and PacketDesign, among others.

The panelists focused on three key questions: What does end-to-end performance management mean to different operator types? How does application performance relate to network performance and visa-versa? What is the relationship between the OTT provider and underlying infrastructure provider.

Chris Woodfield of Twitter talked about the singular monitoring challenges of dealing with millions of small sessions originating from smartphones, while Geoffrey Holan spoke of the advances Telus had made by merging its wireline and wireless teams to create network management synergy. Aamer Akhter of Cisco discussed system advances that allow per-flow monitoring, while Vikas Trehan, InfoVista and Cengiz Alaetinoglu, Packet Design, expounded on the value of using network intelligence to improve application performance. Ning So of TATA rounded the panel, by shinning light on some open issues like inter-AS coordination that need standardization leadership.
