The 10-year-old boy learns resourcefulness and discovers lessons that will shape his life and future career as a teacher. The Lakota people’s history, culture and education stimulated the author’s self-discovery as he looks back on his childhood adventures.

It’s easy for kids to poke fun at food and traditions from other cultures. But as the author remembers it, “The more experiences I had with the Lakota culture, the more respect I developed for it. I reached a point at which it was difficult to view the Lakota objectively. I’d become part of them.”
