Another offer letter arrived, but it was from the draft board. He chose the Air Force, where he served from 1954 to 1974. During the last half of his military career, he taught advanced airborne electronic maintenance in the mornings, and coached youngsters in baseball, football and basketball in the afternoons.

The author asks if baseball is a game of failures. He answers in three parts. No. 1: Failures by hitters on an average team exceed 4,000 per season, which can be reduced by at least 50 percent. No. 2: Failures by starting pitchers can be eliminated. No. 3: The two biggest on-field problems for managers today are when to pull the starting pitcher and finding a way to get the players to play the proper way. Don’t strike out!
