United Way of St. Joseph County seeks Volunteers for VITA (Volunteer Tax Assistance) Program

Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Every year, United Way of St. Joseph County’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteers help community members prepare and file their taxes for free, helping them receive all the deductions and credits they are eligible for. Just last year, VITA helped over 1,500 people in St. Joseph, Marshall and Kosciusko Counties prepare and e-file their taxes, saving them thousands of dollars in preparation costs and in rapid refund loan fees.  

United Way of St. Joseph County is requesting its fellow community members  make an impact during tax season by becoming an IRS-Certified VITA Volunteer. Interested persons can become an IRS-Certified VITA Volunteer Preparer and learn how to help their friends and neighbors take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly, or choose from a list of volunteer opportunities that don’t involve preparing taxes. No prior tax preparation experience is necessary. All training and materials are free.

The VITA volunteer season will kick off with an open house on September 27, 2012, at 6 p.m. at United Way of St. Joseph County (3517 E Jefferson Blvd., South Bend IN 46615) to learn more about becoming an IRS-certified volunteer. Volunteers can work at one of the 18 sites in St. Joseph, Kosciusko, Marshall, LaPorte, and Elkhart and help hard working families keep their money in their pockets.
