Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- Extracts of Under Milk Wood, a 1954 radio drama first performed on stage in 1953 and later made into a film starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, are being performed on social networking website Twitter on Thursday 4 October.

Swansea Council is behind the idea.  The exchange will be made up of 28 Tweets and the cast will include seven of the best-loved characters from Under Milk Wood.  The script will be kept under wraps until the performance.

Under Milk Wood features an all-knowing narrator who invites the audience to listen to the dreams and innermost thoughts of the inhabitants of a fictional small Welsh fishing village called Llareggub.

Individual cast members will also have their own Twitter addresses during the performance that people will be able to follow through the Dylan Thomas Centre’s Twitter feed.

People who'd like to follow the play should follow the Dylan Thomas Centre on @DTCSwansea and use the #milkwood hashtag to take part in the discussion on the day.  A hashtag symbol is used before a relevant keyword or phrase in a Tweet to categorize it and help people find it more easily when searching on Twitter.

Councillor Nick Bradley, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “Dylan Thomas is Swansea’s most famous son and his legacy across the world speaks volumes for his enduring popularity.

“Performing an abridged version of Under Milk Wood on Twitter is a fantastic idea. It will bring Dylan Thomas into the 21st Century and introduce his rich collection of work to new audiences and a new generation.

“It’s important we do all we can to celebrate Dylan’s links with Swansea, especially as we move ever-closer towards the centenary of his birth in 2014.”

Twitter is one of the world’s most popular social networking websites with the number of global users estimated at over 140 million.

This year’s Dylan Thomas Festival also takes place from 27 October to 9 November. It’s being headlined by top musician Stan Tracey, who will perform a jazz version of A Child’s Christmas in Wales.
