Brussels to host 50 of Europe’s leading advanced biofuels experts

Europe attempts to map out its path towards meeting the mandated 10% biofuels by 2020

Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- (September, 2012) LONDON – In September, a leaked draft proposal showed that the EU is currently considering the elimination of food-crop subsidies for biofuels production by 2020, and capping crop-based biofuels to 5 per cent of EU transportation fuels. At present, biofuels represent 4.5% of the EU’s transportation fuel consumption, with essentially all of this coming from food crops. This proposal therefore represents a radical new direction
Under Directive 2009/28/EC the share of renewable energy in the transport is mandated to rise to a minimum of 10% in every Member State by 2020. The Directive aims to ensure the use of sustainable biofuels only, which generate a clear and net GHG saving without negative impact on biodiversity and land use.
With Europe turning away from food-crop biofuels, there is only one way it can meet its statutory mandate for biofuels: developing domestic production of advanced biofuels. Cellulosic ethanol, next generation biodiesel, algae-based biofuels, high energy-density, purpose grown crops: all will need to be explored and commercialised as part of driving the European bio-economy.
With commercialisation inhibited by limited financing and political uncertainty it is necessary that the entire supply chain for the industry comes together in order to drive forward the carving out of a European domestic bio-economy. Feedstock producers and traders, biotechnology companies, producers, distributors, blenders, finance, regulators, research bodies and politicians: all have a crucial role in the debate and all will be needed if the mandated target is to be met with advanced biofuels.
Green Power Conferences has assembled just such a forum. The European Advanced Biofuels Congress is a conference like no other: a unique, panel discussion only event, featuring an unprecedented line-up of over 50 bioenergy leaders from across the industry supply chain. The most important voices in European biofuels, together in one room, exchanging ideas and debating the key challenges that must be overcome if European next generation biofuels production is to be successfully commercialised.
This event brings together every key player in the development of the European bio-economy: not only allowing you to hear from policy leaders and financiers such as the European Commission, Finland's Department of Energy, the UK's Department of Transport, Capricorn Venture Partners and NIBC, but also from leading big energy companies such as BP Biofuels, Shell, DONG Energy and many more.
