Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- October has 31 days. Virginia has 210 wineries.  Get set. Go.

Find out why Virginia was ranked as "one of the five-up and coming wine regions in the world" by Travel and Leisure Magazine.

Virginia is a "Commonwealth of Wine" - with more than 200 wineries that stretch across every region of the state, from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains.

Now is the best time for wine lovers to start planning a trip to celebrate all things wine. , Distinctive to Virginia, this dedicated wine month coincides with grape harvesting and allows visitors a special experience where local wine tastings, kayak wine trails and vineyard festivals are coupled with the brilliant backdrop of historically significant sites and fall foliage at its prime.

October Virginia Wine Month is a month-long celebration of local wine with special events, tastings, festivals and more at Virginia's 200+ wineries statewide. Since the first October Virginia Wine Month in 1988, the Virginia wine industry has grown tremendously, now ranking fifth in the nation for wine production, and including more than 200 wineries and dozens of wine trails.  Just this year, Wine Enthusiast magazine named Virginia one of the 10 best wine travel destinations for 2012, noting the state's picturesque pastoral landscapes and affable winemakers set Virginia apart as an excellent wine destination on the East Coast.

Visitors to Northern Virginia see entertaining and historic destinations in every direction, from George Washington’s Mount Vernon and the National Air and Space Museum near Dulles to Wolftrap National Park for the Performing Arts and Arlington National Cemetery.

Across the Northern Virginia area, you’ll discover a large number of wineries thanks to relative elevations that offer perfect sites for grape vines. The rolling landscape, with its rich soils from eons of granite and sandstone erosion, gives good air and drainage for wine grapes. Add the moderate winters and a generous growing season and the result is very productive ground for winemaking grapes. Northern Virginia wineries produce fine examples of every wine Virginia offers, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Mandolin, Merlot, Norton, Petit Verdot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Seyval, Vidal Blanc, Traminette and Zinfandel as well as many fruit wines.
