PRLog - Sep. 24, 2012 - HYATTSVILLE, Md. -- The statistics on the growing number of people in the U.S being affected by Diabetes are staggering; With tens of millions diagnosed and an estimated 80 million prediabetic. Add that onto the fact that there are millions of people who have no idea they have diabetes. A few years ago, It was said that around 2,200 people in the U.S alone are newly diagnosed EVERY DAY. It is obvious something needs to be done.
One company intends to do just that.
Steps To Success is a Diabetes & Diet management company and no, it is not just another health related consulting firm. You can feel the passion from it's staff a mile away. Spearheaded by founder Helen A. Jenkins, BSN, RN, CDE, they're focused on educating those with diabetes on how to better manage the disease. Steps offers a myriad of services, from one on one consultations, group web chats, via the company website, and individual and group classes.
By using the internet and taking advantage of the various technologies available to the public, reaching thousands, if not millions of people looks very promising. This is good, because the goal is to reach as many individuals as possible. After becoming an Ambassador for diabetes in partnership with the American Diabetes Association , Helen began to travel around the D.C, Maryland and Virginia area teaching group classes, and educating those affected by the disease.
She is experienced in both the pediatric and adult population, and has also instructed employees in the child care setting how to provide diabetes care to the young child . She teaches them everything starting with identifying the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, how to properly check glucose levels, treatment of high and low blood sugars, carb counting, while still enjoying your favorite foods, understanding the trends of blood sugar readings, and a multitude of other pieces of information.
It's hard to believe this was nothing more than a mere idea no less than a year ago, when she worked as a Certified Diabetes Educator alongside the top Pediatric Endocrinologist at the Renown Children's National Medical Center in D.C. Teaching individuals and families about the disease validated her thought that the general population really does not know about diabetes, or they simply do not understand the disease. She realized that In order to properly convey the message about diabetes, she would have to start her own business. A business that would provide all the resources a diabetic might need at their fingertips, Including daily access to a dietitian, a counselor and herself.
So she did.
Armed with years of diabetes knowledge, strong ADA support and one of the most interactive diabetes and diet management websites on the internet (the members section that boasts everything from web apps to downloadable logs to a forum) she vows to make Steps To Success, for lack of a better word, a Success, by educating one person at a time.
At this present time, she is currently studying to obtain her MSN and her Nurse Practitioner certification in order to provide another service to the clientele that she serves.
