By: Immanion Press Albany, NY – 17 September 2012 – Immanion Press is pleased to announce the latest novel from award-winning speculative fiction author K. A. Laity. Owl Stretching takes place in a not too distant future when GMO crops have blighted the land, yet ancient techniques have made an unexpected reappearance. Synopsis: 'Accidental' shaman Rothschild (“Ro”) Parker has a lot of problems on her hands. Her best friend Simon just woke up from a ten year coma she may have caused, her spiritual guide is a 300 year old magpie, and the planet’s just been taken over by a group of aliens who hot-rod around eating anyone who stands still long enough to be a meal. And if that weren't enough, she’s got a dead cat to bury. Combining mordant humour with mythic exploration, Owl Stretching shows that the inner worlds are every bit as mysterious—and dangerous—as the far reaches of the cosmos. “Laity is a very remarkable sorceress indeed.” ~ Elizabeth Hand, award winning author of Generation Loss, Available Dark, Waking the Moon Laity says, “We came up with the tagline Shamans Vs Aliens because it was too crazy to call it ‘an alternative history/science fiction/urban fantasy/shamanistic retelling of the Descent of Inanna/great American road trip’ that takes in Albany, the Berkshires, Kripalu and Boston. I’m pleased that I pull off the seemingly impossible task of making Worcester glamorous and exciting. I started writing this novel when Kurt Vonnegut died and I was thinking how dispiriting it was to realise there would be no new sad but funny novels from him. I hope it’s got a little of his spirit.” K. A. Laity is the also author of the novels Pelzmantel, The Mangrove Legacy, Chastity Flame and the collections Unquiet Dreams and Unikirja, as well as other stories, plays and essays. Her stories slip across genres and categories, but all display intelligence and humour. Dr. Laity teaches medieval literature, film, digital humanities and popular culture at the College of Saint Rose in New York, although last year she was at NUI Galway as a Fulbright scholar working on Writers in the Digital Age.
