Asian Nuclear Industry Showing Major Signs of Growth

Sept. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- The nuclear industry in Asia is expanding with many countries building and planning new plants. Supported by the World Nuclear Association, the 4th annual Nuclear Power Asia returns to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 15-16 January 2013, bringing together the global nuclear power industry to discuss the opportunities of growth in the Asia region.

Focusing on new builds, the conference will be a platform for regulators, nuclear energy agencies and operators to discuss the challenges and opportunities that countries looking at establishing a nuclear power programme are facing.

“There are signs of major growth for the nuclear industry in Asia”, says Daria La Valle, Programme Manager for Nuclear Power Asia, “According to a recent IAEA report, there are currently 41 reactors under construction across Asia, and over the next decade there are 98 reactors planned, with a further 221 proposed.”  

“We are very excited to once again have the support of the World Nuclear Association, one of the leading industry associations in the nuclear space globally”, adds La Valle, “and we very much look forward to working with them towards another high quality event fostering the development of nuclear new builds in Asia.”

“For Malaysia in particular, the upcoming Malay elections will have a major impact on the decision whether the country will go ahead with their nuclear power programme”, explains La Valle, “and this will definitely have an impact on other countries in the region such as Indonesia, where nuclear power could play a significant role in relieving the thirst for energy of the country”.

Overview of nuclear new build in Asia
-   Malaysia plans to have 2GW nuclear by 2020. It has completed preliminary feasibility study and preliminary site selection & ranking, and its government will make a decision by 2014 to proceed with its nuclear programme.
-   China has over 20 reactors under construction and the nation aims to have a nuclear-generating capacity of 80GW by 2020.
-   Indonesia aims to build up to four nuclear power stations by 2025.
-   Vietnam intends to build 8 by 2030. The first of Vietnam's plants will be ready by 2020.
-   South Korea has 6 units under construction with 10 under planning.
