Helping four local families touched by cancer

Sept. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- MARION, MA (August 18, 2012)... Cancer is one of those devastating diseases that we all seem too powerless to do anything about, yet it touches all of our lives in some way. Everyone has a family member, friend or someone they know with this terrible disease. The VP of a Marion, MA based design, construction and management company decided that maybe he could help some of the families in his community.

As Tom Quinlan President of South Coast Improvement Company recalled, “One morning my brother Henry, who is our VP and also the Head Football Coach at Old Rochester High School, told me he personally knew of four families in the Tri-Town area that had a member currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Henry wanted to do something to help out in some small way. That was the genesis of the Tri-Town Four Families Cancer Benefit - my brother wanted to help.”

From there Michelle Holmen, Head Administrator at the South Coast Improvement Company organized the event. Jerry Garcia, General Manager of The Kittansett Club in Marion was contacted to host the benefit for the families and immediately jumped on board and offered up the facility at no charge.  Holmen got the word out through word of mouth and print advertising.  The Old Rochester Bulldog High School Football Community rallied behind it and vendors of South Coast Improvement Company also stepped up to the plate to support the company’s efforts.

The Tri-Town Four Families Cancer Benefit was held last Thursday night at The Kittansett Club and was a huge success. There was live music by Rebecca Correia from Rochester and Jason Kelley from Dartmouth, great food and a roomful of people looking to help. The benefit raised more than $5,000, all of which helps support four families touched by cancer in the community.  South Coast Improvement Company covered the cost of the event.

“I have to give a heartfelt thanks to Michelle Holmen in our office as without her efforts, this never would have happened. Also Kristen Kaminski, John Allessandrini, Dan Talbot, Ethan Sherman and John LaChapelle (employees at South Coast Improvement) who all helped. Sarah Murphy (sister to Tom and Henry) was also a big help in getting this off the ground. Of course, without Henry to spurn us to action, nothing happens. It just feels good to get together with people in a community that cares and to raise funds for a good cause,” says Tom Quinlan.

According to Henry Quinlan, “My community is important to my family. While I know I can’t do much to alleviate the pain that cancer causes, I can do something. We were able to raise awareness as well as some money.  Based on the outpouring of support this year, we plan on making the Tri-Town Four Families Cancer Benefit an annual event.”
