Booker, Senior Health Promotion Award Larry Lucas Heart Champion Award: FACTS ABOUT CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE • African Americans are 2 to 3 times more likely to die from heart disease compared with whites at any given age. 1 • “…hypertension in blacks in the U.S. is among the highest in the world, and it is increasing” 2 • Almost 67 million people have high blood pressure but less than half have it under control. Although African American adults are 40% more likely to have high blood pressure, they are 10% less likely than their non-Hispanic White counterparts to have their blood pressure under control.3 ABOUT ASSOCIATION OF BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS Founded in 1974, the Association of Black Cardiologists, Inc.
