Consuming Passion: Food As Metaphor in Art

Sept. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- There is an inexplicable link between art and food – one that spans cultures, time and place. Throughout the centuries, artists have been attracted to food as a subject and often used it metaphorically: water represented sustenance of life, pomegranates, hope and eternal life; and, the still lifes of the Dutch masters, so gloriously overflowing with fruit, game, fish and fowl, symbolized the abundance of Holland’s thriving economy in the 17th century.

Contemporary artists are still drawn to food as subject matter. “Consuming Passion: Food as Metaphor in Art” brings together artists who work in a variety of media and materials - including edible ones – to express a range of intentions. Some artists use food imagery as a metaphor for human relations and society’s challenges, others to celebrate memory, while others delve into the complexities of the structure of food itself – exploring line, color, pattern and space.
