Sept. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Cats are probably the most lovable and huggable pet around. Aside from being playful, they are also very affectionate. Wouldn’t you just love seeing your cats purring on your feet or lap as their way of expressing their happiness to see you?

You have to be aware though that cats are not all about fun and purring. They sometimes have activities that are unfavorable. You will surely have a big headache seeing your nice couch having scratches all over, or your newly vacuumed carpet with poop or cat’s spray. These can really make your day! Fortunately, there are different ways that you can do to prevent these behavioral problems in cats.

Scratching is one of the most common problems in cats when we talk of their behavior. They tend to scratch everywhere and even your furnishings will not be spared. However, before you deal with this problem, you must first understand why cats like to scratch.
For wild cats, they use scratching as their way of marking their territories to prevent other cats from invading their domain.

For domesticated cats, scratching cannot be considered as territorial markings since they usually don’t have other cats to compete with. Scratching is just one way of relieving their stress or a form of exercise. Cats often scratch after taking a nap therefore it can be a way to stretch their muscles out like humans do.

Other pet owners turn to declawing as their way of controlling the scratching behavior of their cats; however, this is not the most effective way to manage the problem. As a matter of fact, declawing is not healthy for your cats.

Unlike removing the fingertips of human nails, declawing of cats is actually a multiple amputations that can damage the motor and sensory nerves of your pet. Aside from this, recovery from this surgery can be very slow as well as a painful process. This method can also get in the way of your cat’s natural activities like walking, climbing, running, stretching and springing.

Cats are also like people. Their reactions to physical handicaps vary. There are cats that do not have negative reactions to declawing while others become defensive and nervous. This can greatly alter the cat’s behavior and could lead to more violent behavior. When this happens, the pet owner might have no choice but to bring the pet to a shelter.

The best way to have your cat stop scratching on your furnishings is to provide a post and train your pet to use it for its scratching needs. You can position the post near the place where the cat sleeps so that when it wakes up, it can stretch itself into the post and do the scratching.

Another problem in cat is spraying. Cat sprays really smell awful and the problem can get even worst when your feline did the spraying on your carpet. Spraying is also a territorial marking behavior. Cat spray is composed of urine and pheromones, a kind of substance which animals use in communication.

Although most cats spray outside, there are those that like to do it indoor. One way of dealing with this is by neutering the cat when it is still young. It may not be a guarantee but it could help. Controlling this behavior is very important to prevent your home from awful smell.

Cat’s behavior can be controlled and managed. All you need is a good guide so you could deal with the problem effectively.
