Sacramento Stand Down is a unique opportunity for homeless veterans to obtain much needed items through donations. “We wish to meet one of the bigger needs that seems to go unmet year after year. Women’s groups have told us that homeless women and homeless women vet need bras and underwear,” Veterans Democratic Club of Sacramento’s President, Lawson Stuart said. Stuart continued by touching on the uniqueness of women veterans needs stating, “Women vets are often left on the sidelines of the Veterans efforts, if involved after their service at all. Their needs are not any less important, nor do they experience much different post service issues than men. As the US, California, and Sacramento come to better terms with the amount of women who serve our country, the more we can highlight the need to care for the women veterans and to keep them engaged when they return the better.”
This is the first veterans focused effort that The Bra Recyclers have had the opportunity to take part in. The Bra Recyclers will be providing The Democratic Veterans Club of Sacramento with 100 bras for the event. “ We are honored to be able to give back to women veterans who served our country. It is unimaginable to think that anyone who has put their life on the line for our freedom has to worry about not having a simple lingerie staple like a bra,” says, CEO of The Bra Recyclers, Elaine Birks-Mitchell.
The Sacramento Stand Down 2012 event will be held September 21-23 at Camp Pollack. For more information about the event or volunteering, please call 916-646-6004 or email standdownsacramento@
