Bosco Tech's Green Technology Course Prepares Students for College and LEED Certification

Bosco Tech's new green technology and sustainability course is preparing high school students for advanced architectural and engineering studies at the university level and enabling them to earn LEED certification.

Sept. 18, 2012 - PRLog -- A recently developed, in-depth green technology and sustainability course at Don Bosco Technical Institute (Bosco Tech) is preparing high school students for advanced architectural and engineering studies at the university level while enabling them to achieve certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
LEED is a system for rating the design, construction and operation of environmental and energy efficient commercial buildings, complexes and homes. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction and maintenance solutions.
“The purpose of teaching the course is to put our students at the forefront of energy efficient architectural design,” said Chris Barnett, chair of Bosco Tech’s Architecture & Construction Engineering (ACE) department. “The curriculum helps them understand the various considerations an engineer or architect weighs in ensuring a project meets the most modern efficiency and sustainable construction requirements possible.
“Sustainability knowledge, which is now common in university design and engineering programs, and success in the LEED exam, provide an added value to our students’ college admissions process and resumes.”
Bosco Tech’s ACE students must complete a series of green-awareness lectures and labs and successfully pass the state-issued LEED examination in order to earn certification. Taught for the first time last semester, the school’s course is also a pre-requisite for the senior project, the design and construction of a fully LEED-compliant set of architectural presentation drawings and a structural model to be entered in a regional competition. Last year, Bosco Tech students earned highest honors in the competition.
Bosco Tech is the only all-male Catholic high school in the state that uniquely integrates a college-preparatory curriculum with a comprehensive, four-year, project-based science and technology program. The STEM-based academic curriculum allows students to exceed university admission requirements while completing extensive integrated coursework in one of five engineering-related fields: Architecture and Construction Engineering; Computer Science and Electrical Engineering; Integrated Design, Engineering and Art; Materials Science, Engineering and Technology; and Media Arts and Technology.
