Count Down On As Total Solar Eclipse Nears Port Douglas & Daintree

With just eight weeks until the total solar eclipse, now is the time to finalise travel and accommodation to Port Douglas, the regions’ premier spot to view this natural phenomena, or risk missing out.

PRLog - Sep. 16, 2012 - PORT DOUGLAS, Australia -- While accommodation bookings are coming in fast, Tourism Port Douglas & Daintree executive officer Doug Ryan, was confident those still planning a holiday to north Queensland for the extremely rare one-off event, wouldn’t miss out.

“There is still accommodation available, although I wouldn’t leave it too long. We are anticipating a last minute rush and the remaining rooms to be snapped up quickly.”

Mr Ryan said while a total solar eclipse occurs on average once a year or every other year, somewhere on earth, very few people have ever had the opportunity to see one.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon moves in front of the sun, completely covering it for a very short time. It darkens the whole sky, allowing the sun to be directly viewed. During a total solar eclipse, the stars will come out, the horizon glows, the temperature drops, and day turns into night.

“To see a total solar eclipse you have to be situated in a very narrow strip of land known as the path of totality. There are literally thousands of people from all over the world who chase total solar eclipses, no matter where and we are lucky to have it here right in our backyard.”

Mr Ryan said it was a win-win for visitors who not only had the opportunity to be part of this once in a lifetime event but could also make the most of the region’s natural attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest during their stay.”

While the eclipse may only last a few minutes, Mr Ryan said the three-day Total Solar Eclipse Festival leading up to the event from November 11 to 13 would provide a great atmosphere in the town’s heart. “Local restaurants and retailers will be bringing their businesses out on to the street. There will be live music and night markets that will help to create a vibrant atmosphere for visitors,” he added.

Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas is also adding star quality to the number of dedicated eclipse events in Port Douglas with a Total Solar Eclipse Party on November 13. The event will be hosted by the talented comedian Julia Morris with entertainment by singing sensation Karise Eden of The Voice.

Mr Ryan added that there was public access to all beaches in the Douglas region, some of which included Port Douglas’ iconic Four Mile Beach as well as Newell and Wonga Beaches in Mossman and Cow Bay and Coconut Beach in the Daintree.
