Sept. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- Medistem discovered a new type of mesenchymal stem cell that originates from the endometrium and is collected from menstrual blood.  Termed the "Endometrial Regenerative Cell" (ERC), this cell population is unique amongst clinical-stage stem cell candidates because its physiological role appears to be stimulation of monthly angiogenesis.  This is confirmed by published reports of higher expression of angiogenic factors compared to bone marrow and placental stem cell populations.  Additionally, we and others have published that ERC possess significantly enhanced levels of the self-renewal gene telomerase and the pluripotency gene OCT-4 compared to other stem cell types.  From a practical perspective, the cells are uniquely positioned for clinical development because of low cost of production, ability to use one donor to generated 20,000 doses, and no requirements for tissue matching.  Efficacy of ERC has been demonstrated in animal models of heart failure, critical limb ischemia, and type 1 diabetes.
