Sustainable Building Advisor Certification Program Kicks Off in October

The comprehensive nine month course of study has been approved as a level 400 Mastery Program by the United States Green Building Council. Classes taught at Partner Engineering and Science, Inc.’s new sustainable headquarters in Torrance, CA

PRLog - Sep. 13, 2012 - Torrance, CA – The 20,000 square-foot sustainable headquarters of Partner Engineering and Science, Inc.  will serve as the Los Angeles area classroom and laboratory for The Sustainable Building Advisor Institute’s (SBA) green building and sustainability certification program, announced SBA Program Facilitator Amy Stevens.

The SBA Program in the Southern California Area is part of an international network of course providers offering programs throughout North America.

The SBA program will be taught by a network of more than 30 subject experts including famed organic architect Eric Corey Freed, LEED AP; Director of UCLA Extension’s Landscape Architecture Program Stephanie Landregan; and urban planner and noted expert on sustainable transportation planning Ryan Snyder.

“The Partner headquarters is the ideal environment for our Los Angeles ‘campus’,” said Stephens, a National Member of the USGBC and co-chair of the Arizona Chapter’s education committee.   “The building, which will be part of a series of site visits, is an important component of the curriculum.  Students will experience firsthand how Partner was able to transform an obsolete 1960s vintage office building into one of the most sustainable and energy efficient buildings in Southern California.”

Partner acquired the building in Torrance, CA  in 2010 and undertook a $3 million renovation that included such sustainable and energy efficiency improvements as: rooftop solar arrays that provide for 50 percent of energy consumption; solar tubes and large treated windows to provide abundant natural light; motion sensors and interior Energy Star-rated lighting systems that automatically dim in response to daylight; a “green roof” of drought resistant plants that serve as natural insulation and reduce the building's “heat island” effect; a reflective white “cool” coating on the remaining portions of the roof; and an integrated building management system with aggressive energy conservation control strategy programming and auto-demand response capabilities.

The classes will be taught in Partners’ third floor training and meeting space, with a view of the solar panels and green roof.

Upon completion of the SBA Program and CSBA Exam, students will earn the designation of Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA).
In addition:
•   Architects will earn 100 American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Learning Units.
•   LEED Accredited Professionals & LEED Green Associates may also earn up to 100 continuing education units through the USGBC approved Mastery Level Education Provider Program.
•   Members of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) will receive continuing education credits for Facility Management portion of the curriculum

The SBA program starts in October.  In addition to Los Angeles, classes will be offered in San Diego and Palm Springs.  For more information on the SBA Program go to http://www.sbaprogramsocal.com/.
