The results of the study showed that the number of unvaccinated children in the state increased by 25 percent from the years of 2008 to 2010. Dr. Buttenheim, who is one of the authors of the study, explained that the risk of disease outbreak is much greater when there is a high percentage of people in the population who are unvaccinated. She also explained that vaccinations are important they help protect against illnesses and diseases that were once deadly. Dr. Buttenheim also cites a case of measles outbreak in order to defend her position on vaccinations. In 2008, an unvaccinated child caused several kids in a doctor’s office and his school to get measles. The number of children and adults developing measles is on the rise. In fact, a recent report done by the Center for Disease Control showed that measles cases have quadrupled since 2009. Nearly 72 percent of the people who develop measles are unvaccinated. Dr. Buttenheim is urging people to get their children vaccinated because that will help save lives. It is estimated that measles vaccinations will prevent 42,000 deaths each year. This will also help save the United States 14 billion dollars each year on health-care related expenses. Currently, there are only 20 states that allow students to be exempted from vaccinations based because of personal beliefs. California is one of those states. Dr. Buttenheim concluded by saying that the school nurse can play an important role in persuading parents to get their children vaccinated.
