Sept. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- West Sound Academy's Frodel Gallery presents Landscape & Spectacle, a collection of paintings by Doug Dammarell, on exhibit from August 28, 2012 through October 1st.

Dammarell, a visual arts instructor at North Kitsap High School and the district's Parent Assisted Learning Program, brings a selection of his watercolors and oil paintings for this show.

Throughout his life, many artists have inspired Dammarell, starting with his grade school art teacher at Bellevue Christian School, Charles Brown. In the seventies Dammarell studied at Green River Community College then moved on to Seattle Pacific University where he earned his teaching degree.  During summer breaks from teaching positions - in Tacoma and later in Alaska - Dammarell continued to study art with Larry Metcalf at Seattle Pacific University.

After three winters in Alaska, Dammarell moved to Poulsbo where he met Julann Campbell. She taught him the ins and outs of painting in the great outdoors, or en plein air, as they say in France. Later, Dammarell studied at Rhode Island School of Design with Lenny Long, John Thornton, Robin Wiseman, Jamie Murphy and Paul Sproll and earned a master’s degree. For the last six summers Damarell has been a resident at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he works with artists from across the globe and draws inspiration from the incomparable collection in the museum.

Now, Dammarell makes his home in a cozy condo in downtown Poulsbo with his teenage son, Max. His studio space is limited so on balmy days, he often packs his paints and heads for his favorite places — Battle Point Park, Indian Island, Oak Bay, Salt Creek or even Skagit Valley. When winter rains return he inspires a new generation of artists and art lovers at North Kitsap High School. They inspire him as well.

Mr. Dammarell will speak to WSA students about his work during the afternoon assembly time on September 13th.  West Sound Academy will host a gallery reception for the artist on Thursday, September 20th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The public is invited, and guests will be able to enjoy light refreshments, along with a wine-tasting.
