Top Tips for Preventing Condensation
1 ) Keeping your property well ventilated is key to preventing condensation problems. Most double glazed windows have a ‘trickle’ setting to allow air flow – make sure your windows are set to ‘trickle’ to allow moisture laden stale air to escape the property.
2) Keeping clean is a major source of condensation. When somebody has had a bath or a shower there will be moisture in the air that needs to be removed. Opening a window or using an extractor fan will remove the moisture from the room. Don’t forget to keep the bathroom door shut to prevent moisture escaping to other parts of the house.
3 ) Cooking is another major source of moisture. If possible always use an extractor hood to remove excess moisture from pots and pans when cooking. Always keep the extractor running for a while when you have finished cooking as there will still be moisture in the room for some time after. If needs be open a window as well to ensure the moisture leaves the room.
4) When cooking try and keep the lids on pots and pans to prevent moisture escaping in to the room.
5) Drying clothes inside should be avoided whenever possible. Whenever possible always try and dry clothes outside, or if using a tumble dryer make sure that it is properly vented and the pipe goes outside.
6 ) The temperature in the house plays a key part in keeping condensation at arms length. The house should be kept at a constant temperature during the cooler months to prevent the formation of condensation through cold air meeting warm air. If the temperature remains constant it limits the chances of condensation forming.
7 ) Any furniture that is placed against outside walls should have a slight gap between it – this allows air to circulate and not become trapped. If air becomes trapped it will condense on the walls and may form black condensation mould.
8 ) A constant movement of air within the property is vital to prevent condensation – make sure air bricks and chimneys are clear to allow air to flow in and out of the property.
9 ) General house maintenance can also help – checking areas such as the roof to ensure there are no leaks and gutters to make sure they are not blocked or damaged and causing water to penetrate the brickwork.
