Mitsubishi Motors Unveils "e-Assist" Active Safety Technology

In an effort to deliver more advanced safety systems for its drivers, Mitsubishi proudly introduces new e-Assist technology.

Sept. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- In their ongoing effort to protect motorists and passengers, Mitsubishi will now include state-of-the-art systems through e-assist active safety technology. Using millimeter-wavelength radar and a finely tuned camera, e-assist will help drivers stay safe on the road through three essential systems: adaptive cruise control (ACC), forward collision mitigation (FCM), and lane departure warning (LDW). This feature will make its first appearance in the newly redesigned Outlander SUV.

The ACC and FCM are supported by a radar unit that is stationed behind the front grille. Its job is to monitor the speed and relative distance of any vehicle in front of the SUV. It has a maximum range of 200 meters, and the 77 GHz millimeter-wavelength radar unit performs well under any conditions.

Supporting the LDW system is a micro-sized camera mounted inside the windshield. This helps to prevent fogging on the lens and guarantees optimum viewing range. In addition, a sensor will automatically turn on the windshield wipers when it optically detects rain.

The adaptive cruise control system actively monitors the distance and relative speed of a vehicle in front of the SUV. The system is finely calibrated to maintain smooth operation and keep a preset distance even if the vehicle in front slows down or speeds up. When there's no motorist up ahead, the new Outlander will accelerate to the speed set by the cruise control.

The Forward Collision Mitigation System similarly keeps track of the vehicle in front of it, and if it detects a decrease in speed or distance it will apply the front brakes and bring the car to a halt if necessary. In addition, an alarm will sound inside the cabin, while the brakes are being actively applied. It's extremely helpful under adverse conditions, like during foggy or rainy circumstances or at night.

The Lane departure Warning System is designed to activate at 40 miles per hour or higher, and it uses the camera to detect the lines dividing lanes of traffic. If it observes the vehicle about the drift into another lane, it will activate an audible alarm and warning lights, especially if the turn signal was not activated. The system is also designed to automatically switch off when on a 2-lane highway to prevent the alarm from going off frequently.
