Faculty and graduate students from GCU’s M.A. in Holistic Health Studies program will soon provide additional health and nutrition content for www.cookingwithnonna.com, the site where host Rossella Rago focuses on Italian cooking and the extraordinary influence of Italian grandmothers, or nonne. Ms. Rago, who comes from a long line of foodies, was the 2010 winner of Food Network’s “24 Hour Restaurant Battle: Battle Italiano.” Cooking with Nonna, which has been in production since 2009, will draw on the university’s expertise to reinterpret classic Italian recipes provided by grandmothers— “It is a great honor to partner with Georgian Court University and its holistic health program in fostering my mission to raise awareness of the many great-tasting and healthy recipes that have been hiding in plain sight in the traditions and customs of our grandmas,” says Ms. Rago. “In partnership with GCU, I would like to adapt many of these grandmas’ classic dishes to meet the needs of my fans who have dietary restrictions resulting from diabetes, high cholesterol, or other conditions, but still want to enjoy some of Grandma’s traditional home cooking,” she says. “As we work together to educate the public on better eating habits, it is my hope that we can contribute to the prevention of these ailments in our community.” Ultimately, holistic health is all about exploring the various dimensions of wellness, according to Sachiko Komagata, Ph.D., chair of the GCU Department of Holistic Health and Exercise Science. “Promoting health consciousness and wellness is critical to making the most of the mind-body-spirit connection. Together, GCU and Cooking with Nonna will do just that.” About Georgian Court University Founded in 1908 and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts core and a special concern for women.
