Accountants adopt DriveLock to protect client data

When it comes to data security, DriveLock holds the key, says Jon Stanton, Director of PEM IT Services

Sept. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- Leading the way with expertise in the accountancy sector, Stanton states that increasing awareness of data protection is making accountants look at how they can improve their information security. “At PEM IT Services, we have seen unprecedented interest in DriveLock from accountants. Firms are increasingly waking up to the fact that their responsibility is to protect the data they hold, and DriveLock addresses key areas of concern – enabling firms to provide the appropriate levels of protection that their clients would expect.”

Morris Owen and Hawsons are two such forward-thinking accountancy firms to employ the latest in data-loss prevention systems to ensure that their clients’ financial and proprietary data is protected. DriveLock offers dynamic access control for drives such as USB flash drives, floppy disks and CD-ROMs, and also controls all other device types, such as smart phones and cameras. Its granular approach to protection allows organisations to create bespoke programmes and customised protection policies.

Morris Owen Chartered Accountants, based in Swindon, deployed DriveLock to control access to USB devices. “Our clients trust us to protect the information we hold for them; we take that responsibility seriously,” says Ian Sumbler, partner at Morris Owen. “Although we already had policies in place to stop staff using unprotected USB devices, we had no way of enforcing them,” he said. “DriveLock allows us to enforce our policies centrally across our network, ensuring we only use encrypted devices to transfer data.”

“By their very nature,” says Stanton of PEM IT Services, “accountants deal with sensitive personal data. To complete personal tax returns, for example, they collect information on salaries, bank details and investment information. If a firm runs a payroll bureau, then they may be handling bank and salary details for thousands of people. Protecting this information from accidental or malicious loss is a challenge firms must address.”
As well as controlling external devices, DriveLock also provides full disk encryption (FDE) to laptops. Using pre-boot authentication, it protects the whole drive and encrypts to international standards, such as FIPS 140-2.

Hawsons Chartered Accountants in Sheffield deployed DriveLock to encrypt their laptops’ hard disks. “Our staff works with client information while away from the office,” said Charles Kavazy, Hawsons IT director, “but we have to ensure that that information is safe. We must protect our clients’ data, and DriveLock allows us to do that without restricting the productivity of our team.”

Concludes Jon, “Accountancy firms such as Morris Owen, Hawsons and others are taking due diligence to ensure against unintended data loss or theft of client data. DriveLock is a valuable tool that enables them to service and protect clients – no matter how big or small”.
