Bathtub Caulking Tips and Video

Villa Park Hardware shares some tips to re-caulk a tub or shower and a video.

Sept. 8, 2012 - PRLog -- If you need to re-caulk a tub or shower, pick a caulk with added silicone. Most are labeled tub and tile caulk. If you use a pure 100% silicone, it is much harder to control. If you don’t have a caulk gun, a squeeze tube of tub and tile caulk is a convenient, easy to use caulk. The squeeze tubes have enough caulk to complete one regular tub or shower.

You should always remove the old caulk if you are re-caulking a tub or shower.

To remove the old caulk, a two sided caulk removal tool is the most effective. You will be able to drive it into the corners and remove the majority of the old caulk. Then you can use a plastic scraper to get most of the remaining caulk off. If more scraping is needed, finish with a one sided razor, keeping the edge at a very small angle.

If you have any mold or mildew, remove it before applying the new caulk or it will bleed through. Use bleach at 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Wear rubber gloves and do not mix with any other chemical. Rinse thoroughly. If you want a ready to use product, Tilex Mold & Mildew Remover is a great product.   Spray it onto the areas with mold and mildew and let it stand for a couple of minutes.  The product will work quickly and with less scrubbing than other bathroom products. Do not mix with any other products. Rinse thoroughly.

To apply the caulk, cut a small opening off the tip of the caulk tube. You can add more where it is needed and blend it in while it is still wet. Apply the new tub and tile caulk in a small bead and smooth with your finger or a smoothing tool. If you have applied too much caulk, just remove the excess with your finger or a paper towel and keep working it while it is wet until it looks good.

You can also put painters tape on both sides of your caulk line to make the smoothing job easier. After applying the caulk, smooth it in place and remove the tape. There will be a ridge line formed by the tape that will have to be smoothed by a finger or caulking tool. Make sure to smooth out the edges while the caulk is still wet.

With a little practice, anyone can get a professional finish.
