The second day of the show, Tuesday, 11 September, will be highlighted with the signing of a bilateral agreement declaring U.S.-American cooperation on alternative aviation fuels development and market introduction. The German Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, is expected to sign the agreement together with U.S. Ambassador to Germany Philip D. Murphy at 5:00 PM (right after Chancellor Merkel has completed her tour).
A press conference follows at approximately 5:15 PM, during which Richard Altman, Executive Director of CAAFI (the U.S.A.’s Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuel Initiative) and Joachim Buse, Deputy Chairman of aereg (Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany) will present the contents of the declaration and answer questions.
Photo opportunities include the above individuals, as well as Dr. Christoph Franz (CEO of Lufthansa), Dr. Jean Botti (CTO of EADS), Egon Behle (CEO of MTU Aero Engines) and Helmut Himmelreich (COO of Air Berlin).
Participants in the Alternative Aviation Fuels Pavilion include:
Algae.Tec’s high-yield, enclosed and scalable algae growth and harvesting system offers cost- competitive biofuel production and a “carbon capture and reuse” solution for carbon emitter industries such as power plants and manufacturing facilities. The company’s Executive Chairman, Roger Stroud, will speak at The Future of Alternative Aviation Fuels, Biomass and Sustainability session.
Algae.Tec has projects with German aviation giant Lufthansa, Holcim Lanka, joint venture discussions in China, and a manufacturing base in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). The Company is also in talks with relevant firms in NSW, Brazil and the United States. Images are available here: http://algaetec.com.au/
BEIHANG UNIVERSITY is headquartered in Beijing, with international collaborators from MIT, University of Oxford, Purdue University and Riso-DTU. Beihang Energy and Environment International Center (EEIC) is involved in cutting-edge research in key areas of global interest, including the development of alternative aviation fuels, low-emission turbines and reciprocating engines for commercial aviation and electric power generation, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal energy, wind energy, hydrogen fuel production and utilization, bio-mass, distributed energy systems and heat engines for poly-generation. In terms of alternative fuels, EEIC members are working on a roadmap for fuel certification procedures. Research focuses on technology development, proof-of-concept and multi-level verification technology of aviation alternative fuels.
CHEVRON LUMMUS GLOBAL Applied Research Associates (ARA) and Chevron Lummus Global (CLG) are partnering with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and Agrisoma Biosciences, Inc., to evaluate CLG and ARA’s 100% drop-in ReadiJet™ Fuel. NRC will test the renewable jet fuel against ASTM and military specifications and evaluate the fuel in ground based engine tests, with the initiative culminating in a test flight with the NRC Falcon-20 jet in Ottawa later this month.
PRIMUS GREEN ENERGY INC., an alternative fuel company based in Hillsborough, N.J., will be speaking and exhibiting at the 2012 ILA Berlin Air Show’s Alternative Aviation Fuels Pavilion. Primus will showcase its proprietary syngas-to-gasoline (STG+) technology, which is expected to dramatically improve economics and sustainability in the aviation industry by producing affordable, high-quality jet fuel from natural gas and/or biomass.
Primus’ fuel can be used as a drop-in substitute for jet fuel produced from petroleum, but has a lower carbon footprint. The company expects to break ground on its first commercial plant in 2013. For more information, please visit www.primusge.com.
SOLENA’s sustainable jet and diesel fuels help airlines and shipping companies cost-effectively utilize non-petroleum sourced liquid fuels. It continues to partner with leading European airlines, co-developing Green Sky-London with British Airways to build Europe's first commercial scale sustainable fuel plant producing jet fuel from waste biomass. It has also identified a site for a Sustainable Biofuel Facility in Germany. This sustainable energy company develops BTL facilities around the world utilizing its proprietary gasification technology as the initial processing block to create the highest value Bio-SPK (Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene).
Solena will be presenting September 11th-14th, issuing an important announcement Thursday September 13th at 2:30 pm in the CAAFI exhibit.
The last year in particular has shown rapid movement and increased global attention on the alternative aviation fuels initiative, including ASTM certification and domestic and international commercial flights using alternative fuels blends, feedstock readiness tool, ongoing competition for the USDA / DOE / DOD grants (see attached list of 2011-2012 headlines).
WESTAR TRADE RESOURCES’s Cindy Thyfault will be discussing the new RTGTM Bond Funding Program that can assist in financing sustainable jet fuel projects around the world. She will also be
speaking during the conference, "The Future of Aviation Fuels," on September 12th. Westar is an international financial consulting company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Known for the development, marketing, consulting and funding of start-up & expansion of new businesses, both domestically and internationally, the depth of projects has extended to all forms of renewable energy and bioproducts, food and fiber manufacturing, green building products and import-export manufacturing and commodity trading.
