Vigil Fighting System International is located in the Water Wheel Building at 235 East Main Street (corner of Michigan and Griswold, Suite 103) in Northville.
Created by Dan Vigil and called the Vigil Fighting System (VFS), the technique taught during this seminar combines different forms of martial arts. The first seminar, VFS Fundamental Principles & Tactics, teaches students techniques that are based on instinctive reactions and gross motor skills that are possible to use while under extreme stress.
VFS uses a combination of different forms of martial arts that Vigil has been learning since he was eight along with personal experience garnered from his days as a bouncer and information gleaned from leading experts in both martial arts and the security industry. Techniques are designed to keep you on students on their feet, quickly disable an opponent and retreat with their face and family intact.
“All women and men live with a certain level of risk of violent crime,” said Vigil. “Even though the primary choice is to avoid or deter physical assault whenever you can, such a case is not always possible. There may be confrontations from which you cannot escape or where your attempts to diffuse a hostile situation are futile.
“When you face imminent bodily injury or harm, you need to know how to defend yourself quickly and effectively, especially if you find yourself without your pepper spray or stun gun in hand, and you are left with only your bare hands as tools for your safety.”
Students begin by learning the three “VFS Cycles”. These are simple martial arts techniques that are easy to do in series and designed to create forward pressure and stopping potential. They represent a powerful base of techniques systematically designed to stand alone or work in concert with other aspects of the VFS.
Working hand in hand with the “VFS Cycles” are defensive techniques designed to stop, parry and redirect blows. Simple drills designed to quickly build both reflexive defensive responses and offensive skills into muscle memory are introduced and practiced. Several situational drills are worked to give an idea of how the techniques are applied against the most common street attacks.
A large number of fights end up on the ground and techniques to keep individuals on their feet, or get them back to their feet are presented. These are the techniques that are useful in the prevention of sexual assault.
By focusing more on principles of fighting than specific techniques, students leave with a well-rounded knowledge and good idea of how to defend against any unarmed attack.
“The great thing about VFS is that it does not require years of practice to be useful,” said Vigil. “Our beginner techniques are simple enough to be immediately applicable after a short amount of training.”
Cost for the seminar is $75. A non-refundable down payment of 50 percent of the $75 course fee is required to hold a spot in the class. To register, call 855-714-7776 ext. 101. More information can be found at www.vigilfightingsystem.com.
