Headlining the evening will be RJ & The Soul (formerly MPLS South) who came up with the idea of changing the show into a benefit for women in music upon noticing that all the acts on the bill were female-fronted. Convincing the other bands to give up their compensation was easy, finding organizations and working out the logistics in such a short amount of time (less than a week). They sent letters of interest to a wide range of arts, music and girl empowerment organizations. She Rock She Rock and Jazz88 were the first to respond, which was great seeing as how they were at the top of the list.
Having just recently renamed their quintet, RJ & The Soul have over 20000 downloads of their debut EP, since its release this past January. The Triple Rock is a cornerstone of the West Bank neighborhood and was a natural choice for celebrating their anniversary in the same neighborhood where they debuted. In 2010, RJ & The Soul, who at the time were a ‘gypsy funk’ trio, opened for other local indie darlings, Lucy Michelle & The Velvet Lapelles at the West Bank Music Festival. Since then they've fleshed out the lineup and have performed all over the Twin Cities, not to mention performances on KARE11 Today, WCCO News, KFAI, Uptown Art Fair, the May Day Festival and back to back appearances on the main stage at the 2011 and 2012 TC Pride Festivals. Additionally, they’ve taken their popular rock, funk, rhythm & blues on the road regionally with dates in Duluth, Winona, Madison and Chicago.
Acoustic duo and relative newcomers to the Twin Cities music scene, Curbside Bandit will be opening the evening fronted by singer/pianist Whiteny Hicks. They’ll be followed by jazz/pop sensation, Elena fresh from her debut album release at the Dakota Jazz Club. Rounding out the evening’s entertainment will be the Midwest music veterans of the funk-soul review powerhouse collective, The Undergroove, featuring “Queen” Drea Reynolds on light percussion, spoken word and lead vocals. RJ & The Soul, under the lead of their dynamic frontwoman, Rachael Johnson (aka, “RJ”) will close the evening.
