Manchester’s ‘World Logistics Hub’ aims to boost local job recruitment

Manchester Airport was announced as one of the coalition government’s first enterprise zones.

Sept. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Centred on the Airport City project, this aims to transform Manchester Airport from a regional transport hub into an international business destination.

Plans have been submitted for a new £100m ‘World Logistics Hub’ would create more than 1,800 jobs in the enterprise zone at Manchester Airport.

Airports operator Manchester Airports Group (MAG) is hoping the new development in the southern zone would generate exciting logistics opportunities over the next fifteen years alongside roles created in the construction process.

The proposal comprises of a mixed development of logistics units, creating between 1.2 – 1.4 million sq ft of new logistics space next to Junction 6 on the M56, close to the existing airport freight area.

The North West of the UK currently produces an estimated 60 per cent of the country’s industrial output, a significant proportion of which is exported. MAG believe the World Logistics Hub will seek to capitalise upon this output, combining with the Airport’s existing cargo facilities at the adjacent World Freight Terminal, to create a truly world-class logistics district in Manchester.

The scheme will also create a sustainable commercial product of international significance that will aim to provide high quality and well-connected logistics facilities with access to the global marketplace and a population density of over 24 million within a 200 mile radius.

John Atkins, MAG’s Airport City Director believes the hub will be an exceptional prospect to improve international trade, cut transit times and drive more efficient, sustainable supply chains whilst supporting the local community and stimulating economic activity in the North West.
