The film stars Skeet Ulrich, Christian Kane, William Devane and Madelyn Deutch as the crazy New Mexico crew that takes Mine That Bird, the small, crooked-legged racehorse, on a fun-filled road trip across the country to the land of Kentucky’s blue bloods.
Wilson, who produced Oscar-winner Dances with Wolves, The Bodyguard, Wyatt Earp and Message In A Bottle, is directing the film he co-wrote with screenwriter Faith Conroy.
“This story is quite the romp,” Conroy said. “It’s inspiring, heartfelt and shows that even the wildest of dreams can come true.”
Ulrich (As Good as it Gets) plays Bennie “Chip” Woolley, Mine That Bird’s trainer, who trailered the longshot gelding 1,600 miles to Louisville for the biggest show in horseracing. Kane (Leverage) plays Mark Allen, co-owner of Mine That Bird with equine veterinarian Leonard “Doc” Blach, played by Devane (The Dark Knight Rises). Deutch (Mayor Cupcake) plays Alex Ayres, Mine That Bird’s exercise rider.
Director of Photography Tim Suhrstedt (Little Miss Sunshine) brings his vision to the film’s cinematography, shooting at locations in Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Sante Fe, New Mexico. Filming also includes scenes at Sunland Park Racetrack in New Mexico, Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles.
