Devastation Hits Children in the United States!

The State of Michigan ranks 5th, in foster care numbers for children who are transitioning in and out of the system. Many issues plague the system and the repercussions of a lack of care and concern can follow a child for years to come.

Sept. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- We've all seen the damage that natural disasters have caused, especially during the last few years.  Tsunaumi, hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes.  Natural disasters are caused by an upset in nature.  Floods and fires also cause massive destruction.  Many of these events cannot be avoided or controlled. We see the loss of life, property and possessions during such events.  The devastation is huge.

We go about our daily routines without a care in the world. We don't think about preparing for much beyond the next day. Not to mention the chance that a life changing disaster could occur. Then suddenly the bottom falls and we are shocked. We are confused and bewildered. We don't know what to do and which way to turn. We are slow to respond because we don't expect it.

The good news, for adults, is that we have options. We have skills, jobs, talents, money, friends and family.  The Red Cross and other relief agencies are waiting to help. Sometimes, caring and generous people from the community and across the country are willing to give of their resources. Even though everything may be lost in a disaster, we can rebuild. Our life experiences have taught us how to "suck it up" and move forward, rebuild.

What about the children? The only thing children know is what we have told or shown them. They have no job, life experiences, skills, talents or money. They are short; they have no stamina, no strength and no money or knowledge to rebuild.  Their disasters are many. Along with the natural disasters, tsunaumi, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, fire and floods, there are other disasters in which the children fall prey.  Our children also fall prey to neglect and abuse (physical and verbal).

There are thousands of children in the United States that are devastated because of neglect and abuse. Anytime a child's normal or usual circumstances change, it can be devastating for that child. Losing everything they know and love is a traumatic experience for them.  Remember they have no skills to cope with the change. In most disasters the children usually remain with family, but what about when they lose the family or are removed from their family by the state.  This is the devastation our children face. The trauma associated with that removal or loss is what children in the United States are experiencing.

The devastation of these children causes low self-esteem and a sense of emotional loss as well as the physical loss.  Poor attention, lack of interest, low self-esteem and poor grades in school are some of the symptoms associated with this trauma.

Our goal at I Choose You-Gives is to reach these children at the brink of this devastation. Our wish is that these care packages will cushion the fall or catch them before the sense of loss really sets in.

Our care packages include a stuffed animal, pajamas and slippers, comb and brush, soap, socks, toiletries, a book bag and basic school supplies and an age appropriate toy or book.

Adults are looking to rebuild their physical lives but who is looking out for the children's emotional well being. We are at I Choose You-Gives.
