RMS Titanic's story captured the imagination of the world in print, movies and pictures. Now the 100th anniversary of the tragedy has motivated the story once again. Artist James Lumbers, (known widely for his memory paintings) has approached the subject from a unique perspective. Not from the horror of the event, but rather the innocence of the moment when RMS Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton.

James Lumbers' painting depicts an old man sitting on his porch having lunch. The RMS Titanic is reflected in the window behind him. A blast from her whistle announced her departure as he watches through his binoculars until she faded into the open sea. It was her "Au-revoir" under a warm spring sun. His dog sitting at his feet is waiting patiently for any leftovers from lunch; oblivious to the moment in this peaceful setting when destiny left a footprint for the events that followed a few days later.  Britain was filled with pride as she turned her head to the sea and those aboard the great ship rejoiced at the opportunity to be part of her maiden voyage unaware that the return would be as a spectre that would haunt the minds of generations to follow.
