Boston, MA – September 6, 2012 -- Advanced Practice Strategies (APS), leading innovators in healthcare knowledge delivery, has appointed Robert Ashton, MD, a Board-certified surgeon and co-founder of MDLinx.com, as Chief Medical Officer.
“Dr. Ashton is a true innovator with deep experience in clinical practice and healthcare management,” said Dennis Ferrill, CEO. “He knows first hand that there’s a tremendous opportunity to improve the way doctors and nurses acquire knowledge and strengthen their clinical decision making throughout their careers. Rob will be at the center of our mission to transform lifelong education in healthcare.”

“Healthcare and technology are converging like never before, creating an incredible opportunity to transform continuing education in healthcare,” said Ashton. “Doctors and nurses have invested more in their education than professionals in any other field, but it’s hard to keep that edge honed. APS delivers lifelong, individualized training that targets gaps clinicians might not even be aware of.”

“Recruiting Dr. Ashton to APS caps the company’s effort to build an outstanding leadership team that is primed to take full advantage of the opportunity at hand,” said Bob Higgins, Chairman of APS, Founder of Highland Capital Partners, and Faculty Member at Harvard Business School. “By redefining continuing medical education, APS is leading the way to a cost-effective healthcare system that delivers the best care possible.”
Dr. Ashton is a Board-certified surgeon in both Thoracic Surgery and General Surgery. Before joining APS, Dr. Ashton served as Director of Thoracic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, and Director of Surgery at St. Luke’s Hospital. He has extensive experience in both clinical medicine and academic research. He has lectured, performed surgery, and taught nationally and internationally.

Dr. Ashton has worked with several healthcare venture investment firms. He is the co-founder of MDLinx.com, an internet-based company that provides medical information to physicians and other healthcare providers.

Dr. Ashton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Philosophy from Muhlenberg College and a medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed his training in thoracic surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Cardiothoracic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
