He will discuss how traditional variation analysis is conducted in a rigid body environment, where parts are assumed to remain intact, and not bend or distort through production or assembly. FEA data encompasses the effects of external forces, such as clamping, welding, or bolting, to the assembly. Using FEA in dimensional variation analysis can optimize assembly characteristics for fit, better perceived quality and test a company’s process – not just its end product.
Rick Rots states that, “To best benefit engineers, the application of FEA in dimensional variation analysis should contribute to a closed-loop dimensional engineering approach. The closed-loop approach is referred to as such because it closes the product lifecycle management loop, allowing engineers to apply dimensional engineering to products from start to finish.”
