Neighbourhood Watch: Keeping an eye on the neighbours was UK holidaymakers’ biggest concern

Survey reveals holiday worries about property and possessions as consumers claim home security is ‘too expensive’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep. 5, 2012 - LONDON, 5 September 2012 – Research from D-Link has revealed UK holidaymakers were most wary of the neighbours while they were away from home. Nearly two thirds (63%) stated they wanted to keep an eye on their neighbours, which was significantly ahead of pets (14%), postmen (11%), tradesmen/bin men (10%) and landlords (8%). At the same time the survey revealed that the majority of people (60%) did admit to being worried about the safety of their property and possessions while on holiday, with 61% admitting they were more worried than they were 12 months ago. However, it also showed that more than three-quarters (80%) of people thought the overall cost of home security was too expensive.

“It is understandable that people get worried about the safety of their property and possessions while they are away on holiday. Unfortunately it seems many people are also more wary of their neighbours than they use to be,” said Adrian Edwards, Consumer Solutions Manager at D-link UK & Ireland. “It isn’t that surprising that more people would like to keep one eye on their home while lying on a beach somewhere.  Yet for most people paying for a state-of-the-art CCTV system can cost more than the holiday itself!”

“Consumers are no longer requiring a degree in computing to set up home monitoring cameras. Combining this with advances in mobile technology and anywhere internet access is making home security viable for a lot more people.  All of which should help give holidaymakers with greater peace of mind, meaning their holiday worries should be around flight delays and exchange rates, rather than whether their neighbour has put the bins out correctly,” added Adrian Edwards.

The survey of 2,112 people from Great Britain, asking them their views on home security, was commissioned by D-Link and conducted by independent research company TNS Omnibus.
