Sept. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Formaldehyde is a chemical widely used by industry to manufacture building materials and numerous household products.  Its primary use is in the production of resins and as a chemical intermediate. It is also a by-product of combustion and certain other natural processes.

In homes, the most significant sources of formaldehyde are likely to be from pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde resins. Pressed wood products made for indoor use include: particleboard, hardwood plywood paneling and medium density fiberboard.  Medium density fiberboard is generally recognized as being the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product.  Formaldehyde is also released from some types of insulation.

As far back as 1987 the Environmental Protection Agency classified formaldehyde as a probable human carcinogen.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as a human carcinogen and the California Air Resources Board (ARB) has classified formaldehyde as a Toxic Air Contaminant.

Just a few months ago, Safe Work Australia, a government statutory agency, changed the agency’s hazardous substance entry for formaldehyde.  The agency released a statement that included the following reasoning, “Based on the NICNAS (National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme) Priority Existing Chemical Assessment Report for formaldehyde, Safe Work Australia has updated the entry in HSIS for formaldehyde to reflect recommended changes in classification. The update includes a change to the carcinogen classification from category 3 (limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect) to category 2 (may cause cancer by inhalation) ....”

One company that has been helping businesses and property owners test for formaldehyde and an array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is Sussex Environmental Health Consultants (SEHC).  “At SEHC we have come across problems with high concentrations of formaldehyde in homes and businesses across Delaware, Maryland and surrounding states.  Exposure to formaldehyde can cause both short and long term health concerns.  At SEHC we have the expertise to not only identify formaldehyde issues, but also recommend corrective actions.”

SEHC supports an educational video about formaldehyde that can be seen at:
