Amarillo Diabetes Event Saturday, September 8th

PRLog (Press Release) - Sep. 4, 2012 - Saturday, September 8th,  the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Panhandle Branch is bringing families and friends together from all over the Texas Panhandle to raise awareness and support for the nearly 15,000 families affected by T1D( type 1 diabetes). Rock the Park, will include a chip-timed 5K, a fun run/walk, and a family outreach day on September 8th at John Stiff Park in Amarillo, TX . Walk Chairman is Dr. Douglas Lewis.  Dr. Lewis, a neurologist in Amarillo, was diagnosed with this disease at 36 years old.  

Registration (for walk or timed 5K participants) is located online at www.jdrf.org/walk. Participants will need armbands to participate. Children participating in the event are required to be accompanied by adult participants.

The event will include breakfast offerings, snacks, with Roaster’s coffee, lunch provided by cook teams of the Texas Cattle Feeder’s Association, entertainment by The Chancy Bernson Band, and a huge children’s area sponsored by BSA. Clifford the Big Red Dog will be there, courtesy of Scholastic.  Family friendly activities begin after the walk and feature a rock climbing wall, face-painting, bouncers, Go Big Game Truck, and much more. Wells Fargo Pet Area will provide snacks for well-behaved, leashed pets.  Vendor booths will provide sampling opportunities for attendees.

T1D, formerly known as “juvenile diabetes” affects adults and children of all ages.  There is no cure for T1D.  The onset of T1D does not have anything to do with lifestyle or diet.  All proceeds from the event will go to JDRF.  Adults and children are diagnosed with T1D.  The incidence of children ages 1-5 diagnosed with T1D has increased 5%.  JDRF is an innovator of diabetic treatments while providing education and support to those diagnosed.
