Young AFCEA - Aberdeen Chapter 5K Run to Benefit STEM Initiatives

The Aberdeen Chapter of Young AFCEAns is hosting their first 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk at Ripken Stadium on November 10th to benefit STEM initiatives for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County and Edgewood Middle School.

 
PRLog - Sep. 2, 2012 - BEL AIR, Md. -- The Aberdeen AFCEA Chapter of Young AFCEAns is hosting their first 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk at Ripken Stadium on November 10th to benefit  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County and Edgewood Middle School.  Registration for the 5K is available at http://www.afcea-aberdeen.org/youngafceans5K  Sponsorship opportunities are available http://www.afcea-aberdeen.org/sponsor/29 .

The Young AFCEAns of the Aberdeen AFCEA chapter seek to enhance the STEM education experience in Harford County Public Schools, as well as The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County.  Currently, the Young AFCEAns of Aberdeen participate in a student mentoring program for Edgewood Middle School.  Patrice Brown, the Principal of Edgewood Middle School says, “We look forward to working with the Young AFCEANS for this great event.  This is a great way to promote health and wellness and lifelong learning at the same time.  We are grateful to have such support on behalf of our students. “

A portion of the funds raised for this event will go to outfit the school with STEM related equipment.  In addition, a portion of the funds raised by the 5K will support The Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County, which provides STEM-based recreation and fun activities to boys and girls during after school hours. “We are proud to partner with Young AFCEA on a 5K & 1 Mile Walk,” said Tim Wills, Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County’s Interim Executive Director, “Exposing young people to STEM careers and education is crucial to their futures and the viability of our County in the years ahead.”

One of the goals of The Aberdeen, Maryland Chapter of AFCEA is to promote educational opportunities. AFCEA coordinates and sponsors scholarships and programs that encourage science and technology education, actively engaging participation from educational professionals in the local elementary, middle, and high school community. AFCEA Aberdeen is a growing and dynamic, non-profit organization for local professionals. The chapter's primary mission is serving the community by raising funds to support merit-based scholarships. With over 400 members and growing, the chapter serves Aberdeen Proving Ground, three Maryland counties—Harford, Cecil, Kent— and Southern Delaware.
