Impetus on resource management rapidly shaping Sustainability as India Inc’s operating mantra

Over 300 sustainability leaders driving Indian businesses will be converging in New Delhi on Oct 11th to define the new Sustainability agenda.

Aug. 31, 2012 - PRLog -- Over 300 sustainability leaders driving Indian businesses will be converging in New Delhi on Oct 11th to define the new Sustainability agenda: moving away from Sustainability investments as a means of risk mitigation, to leveraging it for competitive advantage in operations.

Increasing challenges in access to materials, energy and water are rapidly propelling Sustainability as an important dimension to the boardroom deliberations. In addition to the growth in basic sustainability oriented activities in a firm’s operations, there is a growing interest in the business and investment community to leverage these interventions as a core differentiation for the firms.

The 2012 Annual Summit of the Sustainable Business Leadership Forum is being convened with the theme of “Moving from operating defensively to capturing advantage”. It will focus exclusively on the near-term Sustainability needs faced by Indian businesses and will present ways in which responses to these needs can be shaped to usher in strategic change and unlock new value for the firms. The summit is uniquely structured to catalyze the transition of businesses and help firms emerge stronger, leaner and more relevant in the emerging market landscape. Barring a few hundred progressive companies, most Indian corporates are still operating in a defensive manner towards sustainability needs as opposed to moving proactively to propel their organizations forward by leveraging the various sustainability drivers. It is clear that adoption of sustainability contours into business strategy of firms will be successfully mainstreamed only if backed by an ecosystem approach and identification of tangible near-term ROI benefits.

The summit is being shaped by advisors and industry specialists that include Arvind Goel, President and Head Business Group B, Tata Autocomp Systems; Dr Pankaj Chandra, Director, IIM Bangalore; P.S. Narayan, Vice President and Head of Sustainability, Wipro; amongst several others. Amongst key speakers at the event will be Sustainability leaders from organizations such as ABB, Dell, Infosys, ITC, Nokia, Novozymes, and others.

A unique feature of the Summit is a showcase of Sustainability innovations being implemented across India Inc. Further the Summit evening will serve as the host for the 2012 Annual Parivartan Sustainability Leadership Awards. The annual Parivartan Awards are instituted by Sustainability Outlook to recognize and showcase efforts that shape conservation action, innovation and corporate leadership in sustainability.

The conference will cover topics relevant to the near term sustainability agenda and address key questions such as:
• How would the upcoming compliance requirements affect Indian businesses in the short and long term?
• Can compliance be turned into an opportunity? Where is the hidden / latent opportunity in the upcoming compliance obligations?
• Who pays for the sustainability interventions and how do firms recover on their investments?
• Does the anticipated change need a whole systemic revamp to drive the change or can innovative rethinking of business strategy help shape both business and environmental sustainability?
• What should be the organizational design for making a company’s operations sustainable?
• What role do (or would) consumers play in influencing the sustainability decisions for businesses?
• What is (and will be) the role of non-financial metrics in measuring business performance? How can such disclosure be leveraged by the firms?
