California TV Commercial Production Company "Kickass" Launches Big

Aug. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- Its unconventional name aside, the just-launched Orange County, California audio and video production company, Kickass Audiovisuals, is anything but ordinary. The firm is the brainchild of Jesse Springer. A former Creative Director at ad agency powerhouse Omnific, Springer launched Kickass to dive back into his roots of high-end, outside-the-box TV and radio commercial production, but is keeping the firm tied in with his roots at Omnific.

“Cameras, film and so on have been my life since the moment I knew what they were, and the language of video and film is something I speak almost as well as English. Phrases like ‘Get me a quarter apple, New York style, and gel up some 3202 on that Leko spot’ are just about as clear to me as ‘It’s a nice day outside,’” says Springer. “Omnific is a phenomenally talented marketing firm, and it had been my home for four years, so it only made sense to launch our new department as Omnific’s production arm. We’ll be directly associated with them, but we’ll also have the power to stay true to our desire to innovate independently. I’m not the typical producer - I don’t like meetings, I hate strict branding guidelines, and so on. What I love is working with businesses and brands who have the courage to carve a niche for themselves within their industry.”

Besides being a television commercial production company, Kickass employs a team of skilled composers and sound designers. They work with casting companies in Los Angeles and beyond to find voiceover artists for their radio commercial productions, and they work directly with Omnific’s media buying department to book and monitor airtime on local, regional and national multimedia campaigns.

“The phrase we keep using is ‘nimble audiovisual surgery’. Our whole M.O. is to be able to shift technologically and creatively faster than other production companies. The climate of business, especially in the creative services world, is shifting dramatically. Companies actually care that their production partner has a low overhead, isn’t overstaffed and so on. A huge part of our production crew is made up of independent contractors whom I’ve worked with for years. They’re working every day on major blockbuster films, and they’re on call for us when we need to book them. We’re in constant communication, every day, so we know exactly who will be where and when.”

Even with Kickass’ low overhead, Springer has found ways to bring added value to each production client, one of which he describes as Kickass’ “One at a Time Guarantee”. The pledge assures each company they work for that any crew will only be working on one single project at a time. As Springer puts it, “distractions destroy creativity.” He explains, “I really do believe there’s such a thing as ‘getting in the zone’, especially for hyper-creative people. One thing I learned while with Omnific is that sometimes if you want to come up with something original, you really have to shut yourself out from the rest of the world and engage that innate creativity flame that’s usually too elusive in a busy office.”

So what’s with the name anyways? “Most businesses go through their life cycle creative-neutral. They’re afraid that if anyone dislikes them, they’re failing. That’s just nonsense. I chose the name Kickass because it’ll strike the wrong chord with some people. They just won’t find it appealing and they might even find it offensive. On the other hand, the companies that like us won’t just “like” us; they’ll love us. It’s that kind of fearlessness that turns customers into fans - and friends. Life’s not meant to be half-assed, it’s meant to be extreme, and that’s exactly what Kickass is about.”
